Members of Montoursville Fire Department pride themselves on their response times and their systematic and honed approach to saving lives and protecting property. They call it “The Montoursville Way” and feel so strongly about their distinct approach that they made it the slogan in their newly-launched volunteer recruitment campaign – which can be found at www.MontoursvilleFirefighters.org
The recruitment website, along with a social media campaign, face-to-face recruitment and brochures are all intended to provide a clearer understanding of ways to volunteer and to address common questions about volunteering.
Responding to more than 1,500 calls last year, Montoursville Fire Department volunteers are driven by the guiding principle “Expect fire, expect victims.” It is this serious level of preparedness when on the scene that the company hopes will inspire others to volunteer.
The Department’s new recruitment effort is made possible by a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). A recruitment booth, a stepped up social media presence and targeted recruitment materials will all be used to call attention to the benefits of volunteering. Several of those benefits – unique to Montoursville – are also being supported by the FEMA grant. They include: a pay-per-call stipend program and tuition reimbursements starting at $1250 per semester for volunteers who are enrolled in a college or university. Individuals wishing to volunteer with Montoursville Fire Department will receive training and gear at no cost.
“Volunteering is a win-win for both the volunteer and the community. Plus there is more than one way to volunteer,” said Scott Konkle, Fire Chief.
Volunteer opportunities include:
- Firefighters: As a volunteer firefighter, you will protect property and help save lives during an emergency or natural disaster. You will be trained to Montoursville’s heightened standard at no cost to you.
- EMTs: As an EMT you’ll administer pre-hospital medical care and transport the sick and injured to the hospitals. Rescue calls such as motor vehicle accidents and other medical emergencies are skillfully addressed by Montoursville EMTs.
- Fire Police: As a fire police volunteer, you will ensure the safety of the public and firefighters during emergency situations, direct traffic and control crowds.
“Each volunteer possesses a unique gift that, when fused into the collective and combined with others, adds significance to the whole,” says firefighter and fire department Chaplain Matthew Waggoner. “Our only missing piece is you.”
